Roller shutters

Aluminium slats roll down over the glass on their own track — heat, hail and security handled outside before any of it reaches the room.

Shading, not security. Our roller shutters are made for sun, heat and glare control on the outside of the glass. They are not security-rated shutters — that is a different product, which we can quote on request.

The Illovo Light Ledger

We did the homework for this suburb and wrote it down: how the sun actually moves over Illovo at 26.13° south, what the Highveld storm season and high-altitude UV do to a window, and — elevation by elevation — what we would specify and what it costs you in return.

  • The 87° summer sun and the 41° winter one — and which of your walls each punishes.
  • Product recommendations with the honest trade-off written next to each.
  • What trustees can and can't refuse on a sectional-title facade.
  • Sources listed at the foot, so you can check us.

Why here

Illovo's light has its own rules.

Illovo sits in the seam between Sandton's glass towers and some of Johannesburg's oldest tree-lined streets — which means one window can face a sunset reflected off a curtain wall while the next looks into a jacaranda canopy. A single fabric can't answer both.

So we don't specify by catalogue. We specify by elevation: what each pane actually faces, when the sun finds it, and who can see in once the lights come on.

  1. Tower glare, twice a day

West-facing glass catches the low sun directly, then again as a bounce off the office facades along the ridge. Sunscreen mesh on those elevations cuts the dazzle without giving up the skyline.

  2. Overlooked by design

Apartments and clusters stack sightlines on top of each other. Day/night and double-roller layers give daytime view and after-dark privacy in the same window.

  3. Body corporates set the frame

Most exterior work here needs trustee or aesthetic-committee sign-off. We specify clean profiles and complex-appropriate colours, and supply the documentation owners submit.

  4. Highveld afternoons turn violent

Awnings and exterior screens on high balconies live in wind the brochure never mentions — so we specify wind-rated channels and sensors that retract them before the storm front arrives.

Questions

Asked at almost every measure.

Will exterior products need body corporate approval?+

Often yes, in Illovo's clusters and complexes. We specify clean profiles and appropriate colours and supply the product documentation owners typically submit — well-specified exterior systems get approved routinely.

What's the best answer for glare off the tower opposite?+

In order of effect: sunscreen mesh on the worst-facing glass (cuts glare and heat while keeping the view), day/night blinds where privacy matters more once the lights are on, and automation so it happens on schedule.

Can you motorise a unit with no chase for wiring?+

Yes — rechargeable battery motors need no wiring at all, and are the standard answer for apartments and retrofits. Wired motors suit new builds and renovations where an electrician is already on site.

What about privacy at night in a street or tower-facing room?+

Sunscreen fabric gives daytime privacy but reverses once the lights are on inside. A double roller or day/night blind — sheer plus a solid layer — solves this properly for bedrooms and lounges that face other buildings.

Are your blinds safe for small children?+

Chain tensioners are fitted as standard on everything corded, and we'll steer nurseries and kids' rooms toward wand, cordless or motorised options with nothing dangling to reach.

What does the measure and quote cost?+

Nothing. The in-home measure, the fabric samples and the written per-window quote are free, with no obligation.
