Tubular motors inside the roll, controlled by remote, app, schedule or sensor — the premium upsell on every product line, and often the only practical option on Illovo's biggest windows.
Double-volume living rooms, blinds above stair voids, multi-panel walls of glass and fully concealed ceiling systems all share the same answer: motorisation. In an apartment or cluster with several tall panes on one elevation, a single remote or app opening every blind at once turns a chore into a non-event.
It's also the most child-safe way to operate a blind — no dangling chain within reach, ever. Quality motors are quiet, not silent, and carry multi-year guarantees; that's an honest expectation to set upfront rather than promise more than the hardware delivers.
Where it's essentially required
Where a chain would need real force, or the fabric run is too wide for hand control to feel comfortable day to day.
Almost always motorised by design — hand-reaching into a ceiling slot defeats the point of a hidden cassette.
Awnings, external venetians and zip screens pair motor and wind sensor as the responsible spec, protecting the investment before a gust can.
What it costs
There is no single rate for automation, because the motor serves a product, and that product is what the price follows. As a guide per square metre installed, motorised shading across this range spans roughly R2,500 to R7,500. A motorised blockout or sunscreen roller sits at R2,500 to R3,800 per square metre; a motorised aluminium venetian at R2,500 to R3,600; a motorised timber venetian at R3,000 to R4,500; and a recessed, ceiling-hidden system at R3,200 to R5,000.
Those bands already carry the motor itself, the handset or app, and the commissioning call visit. Small windows carry a minimum charge, and linking several blinds to one channel is quoted on the run rather than by the metre. And a band is not a quote: each opening is costed by itself at the measure, and the result is put in writing before a single blind is ordered.
